The link between cancer and exercise that patients should know
## Movement May Be Key in Cancer Fight
New research reveals a powerful connection between physical activity and cancer outcomes. Scientists at Oregon State University recently published findings showing regular exercise can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in various cancers, including breast, colon, and prostate.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, analyzed data from over 68,000 cancer survivors. It found that those who engaged in moderate to vigorous exercise – like brisk walking or cycling – at least 150 minutes per week experienced a 26% lower risk of dying compared to those who were inactive.
"This isn't just about feeling good; it's about potentially extending lives," explains Dr. Neil Shafe, lead author. Exercise helps manage side effects of treatment, strengthens the immune system, and may even impact cancer cell growth.
Doctors are now strongly encouraging cancer patients and survivors to incorporate regular physical activity into their recovery plans, emphasizing that even small changes can make a big difference.
